After an even first half, the Diggers responded with nine second half goals to one to defeat the depleted Pumas 12.11.(83) to 4.4.(28).

Maryborough started brightly enough but injuries to several players left the visitors without an interchange in the second half, allowing the home side to get on top.

“Ballarat had a lot more run after half time and it showed on the scoreboard,” Maryborough defender Gav McGrath explained.

“We were right in the game but, as our better midfield players began to get tired, the Diggers really showed their depth and that was the difference.

“I reckon our guys showed a lot of character in the final term. You could tell they had run out of legs but they didn’t give up.”

Scott Newitt was outstanding for the Pumas, providing plenty of run throughout the match and finishing with one goal.

Matt Powell, Jimmy Keenan, Jake Meyer, David Tull, Euan Tait, Scott Hurley and Jeremy Warfe were also among Maryborough’s best.

Maryborough will face Gisborne in the club’s final away game of the season on Sunday, August 3.
