A five-goal final term saw Maryborough claim its third win of the 2023 AFL Masters Vic Country football season, with a 40-point victory against Kerang on Sunday.

The Pumas hunted in numbers at Wandella in northern Victoria, scoring 11.6 (72) to the Rams’ 5.2 (32).

The visitors stalked the locals for three quarters before racing away after the last change.

Maryborough coach Terry Hillier praised his team’s persistence in the challenging conditions.

“The trips away in Masters footy require an extra effort. The players who made the bus trip this time stayed the course, and got a result they should be proud of,” he said.

The Pumas trailed the locals after the first term scoring one goal to the Rams’ two against a stiff breeze.

Four goals in the second term saw Maryborough back on track though and hot on the heels of a third straight victory.

The Rams responded in the third term with three goals but were unable to shake the Pumas, who took full advantage of a strong tail wind during the last quarter.

Chris Gunn’s flawless decision-making proved decisive in combination with Scott Newitt’s consistent drive forward. Mathew Batson, Tim Lillis, Lyndon Tait and Andrew Hughes were also among Maryborough’s best performers.

The Pumas face a return visit by Kerang on June 4 in Maryborough.
