Maryborough Pumas gave it everything in their game against Kerang on Sunday afternoon at Riverside Park, but were ultimately unsuccessful, going down by 10 points in a game of momentum swings.
It was a hotly contested start to the game, with both teams kicking three goals in the opening quarter. Terry Hillier and Travis Cain both got on the board, with Hillier kicking two of the Pumas’ three goals.
The second quarter saw Kerang start to open up a little bit of a gap, and were able to have seven shots at goal. However, the Pumas were let off the hook, with the Rams only converting three of those opportunities, while the Pumas made the most of their own opportunities with two goals for the quarter, both coming from the boot of Cain.
The Pumas had the better of the third quarter as they tried to overhaul Kerang, and were able to score three goals for the quarter to close to within a goal, thanks to the Pumas’ ability to restrict the Rams to two goals. Hillier, with two goals for the quarter, and Cain both hit the scoreboard, with both players sitting on four goals apiece at three-quarter-time.
However, Kerang were able to kick clear again in the last quarter in what was a see-sawing game of football, kicking three goals in the last to Maryborough’s two, with the Pumas’ goals coming through Lyndon Tait and Brett Forti.
Despite the Pumas’ best efforts, Kerang were able to hold out for an 11.8 (74) to 10.4 (64) victory.
Best for the Pumas were Euan Tait, Cain, Forti, Hillier and Scott Newitt.
The Pumas’ final game of the season sees them play a twilight match against the Gisborne Bulldogs over 45s at Woodend’s Gilbert Gordon Reserve on Saturday night.
