Maryborough has powered to its first win on the road for the 2022 AFL Masters Vic Country season in its final round clash against Gisborne on Saturday.
The Pumas bounded away from the Bulldogs in the second half, stretching the margin to 47 points on the way to a 11.9 (75) to 4.4 (28) victory at the Woodend Recreation Reserve. I
t was Maryborough’s most complete performance of the year after several frustrating matches in the second half of the season.
“Masters’ footy isn’t about the scoreboard but you do enjoy your footy more when you play well,” Maryborough forward Travis Cain said.
“What made a big difference was travelling with a strong side. There was a really good feeling about it when we made the trip this time.
“There have been a few games where there were patches of good footy played. This was a great effort across the board. It was a perfect way to end the season”
Gisborne kicked two of the first three goals of the game but it was Maryborough that had the most run as the Pumas turned the tables in the latter part of the first quarter with the next two goals.
The Pumas then took control of the match in the second term with three goals to one.
Maryborough then produced its best quarter of the year with a further four majors to take the game away from the Bulldogs.
Chris Cudia, Glenn Blackman-Cole and Corey Goldgrills each finished with two goals for the match, with Terry Hillier, Chris Gunn, Brett Forti, Trev Chapman and Andrew Hughes kicking one apiece.
Scott Newitt was named Maryborough’s best by their’ Gisborne opponents, with Jibb Iglesias, Chris Gunn, Euan Tait, Paul Hamilton, Brett Forti and Jackson Fitzpatrick also among the Pumas’ better players.
