With five rounds to go, there is still plenty to play out, but while the top two appears to be locked in, there’s still plenty of interest in the battle for third and fourth.

Talbot did what they needed to do in taking a 57-50 win over Highland Gold, moving up to third in the process.

It was a tight affair on all three rinks, with Paul Gothard giving Highland Gold two points thanks to a 19-17 win over Matt Vernon, but Talbot took the remaining two rinks, with Barb Crossley defeating Tony Lacey 21-15, and Ray Prentice defeating Corry Moss 19-16.

Avoca also benefitted enormously, and have moved up to fourth by a singular point from Maryborough Golf after sweeping Dunolly Gold in a 71-39 win.

Daniel Giddings defeated Wayne Stephens 19-13 and Rebecca Zeuschner took care of Fabio Delconte 20-16, but it was Loralee Field’s 32-10 win over Frank Mifsud that ensured Avoca would take a big win to move into the top four.

Highland Tartan continue to lead comfortably at the top of the ladder, taking an 84-40 win over Newstead to maintain a 23-point lead over Dunolly Blue.

Greg Shay defeated David Cobden 35-10, while Michael Fryar took a 32-8 win over Mark Leckey. Newstead were able to take two points courtesy of Brian Daly’s 22-17 win over Andrew Brumby.

Dunolly Blue closed the gap by just two points, but the reigning champions had an enormous outing against Carisbrook in recording the biggest win in the competition this season, scoring a 129-17 win.

Carisbrook were powerless to stop a terrific display of bowling, with Keith Elliott defeating Denise Matic 43-7, while Alan Weir was even more dominant in recording a 60-4 win. Tony Galofaro completed the day with a 26-6 win over Helen Slater.

Competition returns on January 16, with Highland Tartan leading on 175 points, while Dunolly Blue sits second on 152.

The battle for third sees Talbot assume the position with 114 points, while Avoca sit fourth with 103, Maryborough Golf are in fifth with 102 and Highland Gold sit sixth with 74 points.

The bottom three teams are Newstead in seventh on 49 points, Carisbrook in eighth on 34 points and Dunolly Gold in last on 29 points.
