The electrical company is offering five four-year apprenticeship positions across the Maryborough, Bendigo and Kyneton areas in various roles including lineworkers and substation electricians.

According to Powercor’s Mary-borough field leader Brodie Doolan, the annual apprenticeship program is a unique opportunity locally.

“This annual intake is the only opportunity to join a Victorian electricity network business directly as an apprentice lineworker,” he said.

“Our next round of apprentices will join a cohort of about 200 hired over the last decade and will start what can be a lifelong career.

“All schooling, tools and equip-ment are paid for while undertaking your apprenticeship and there’s heaps of variety in the work you’d be doing, with no two days ever the same.”

Maryborough resident Lachy Ratcliff was one of seven locals who started their apprenticeship last year. The former plumber said the program was a great chance to get a fresh start in a new career.

“I know of a few people who have worked at Powercor and I just saw it as a great opportunity,” he said.

“There aren’t too many oppor-tunities for this sort of job around — most people would have to travel an hour or even more to get a job like this so to have something locally is just amazing.

“They have a mentor program so each apprentice through their apprenticeship is paired up with a mentor and they are there to support you and help you along your way.”

According to Mr Ratcliff, the variety in roles and locations keeps him invested in his new role.

“You could have a day where you have got a new construction job at a new solar farm or you’re completing local maintenance, or you could have a bit of travel up north and do some work up there,” he said.

“In my second week we had the big storms that came through and there were a lot of problems in just trying to get the power back on for everyone — that was an eye opener.

“Just getting out and about and being able to get out in the bucket on the poles — it’s pretty cool and exciting once you get up there and you are doing a bit of work.”

No two days with Powercor are the same, according to Lachy Ratcliff, who in his second week on the job was involved with restoring power following storm damage.
