Matthew Dellavedova’s goal of returning to the National Basketball Association took another step forward this weekend, with the point guard working out for the Sacramento Kings in Las Vegas in an attempt to regain a NBA contract.

Dellavedova is seeking a return to the league following his stint with Melbourne United last season in the National Basketball League, which yielded returns of 10.3 points and 4.9 assists per game, helping United to the semi-finals and securing a berth in the All-NBL Second Team as a result.

Dellavedova last played in the NBA in the 2020-21 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dellavedova’s invitation to work out with the Kings comes as the new head coach of the team, Mike Brown, was also responsible for Dellavedova’s arrival in the NBA whilst head coach of the Cavaliers, having signed the undrafted rookie in the 2013-14 season.

The Kings are currently competing in the NBA’s Summer League competition in Vegas, which provides NBA teams a chance to assess rookie players for their suitability to play in the league in the upcoming season.

Thirty-one-year-old Dellavedova — should he be signed by Sacramento — could primarily be called upon to provide veteran experience and guidance to a young Kings roster led by young stars De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, whilst providing a defensive boost with his tenacious style of play that has become a trademark of his nine-season stint in the league.
