After a car crashed into the rear of another vehicle yesterday, authorities are warning drivers to maintain a safe distance while driving on high speed roads.
Emergency services attended a crash on the Pyrenees Highway at around 11 am on Thursday after a white Mitsubishi ute collided into a black Mitsubishi Pajero.
Travelling north on the main Avoca-Maryborough road, the SUV stopped to turn right towards the Talbot-Avoca road when the ute crashed into its rear.
While none of the motorists involved in the accident were injured, police are investigating the factors that led to the crash, including a possible lack of concentration on the part of the 81-year-old female driver of the ute.
Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Sergeant Paul Martin said it was fortunate no one was harmed but the incident served as a timely reminder for drivers to not only pay attention ,but to maintain adequate space between them and the cars ahead.
“These collisions are avoidable,” he said.
“It’s important to leave good distance between yourself and the car in front of you. Give yourself time to react.
“If you’re involved in a crash on a high speed road, it increases your chances of being involved in a serious injury situation — going into Christmas and New Year’s our core message is around avoiding speeding and alcohol but also impatience, distraction and fatigue.
“There will be more traffic on the road so it’s important people remember to be mindful and considerate of all road users.”
Anyone who witnessed the collision on the Pyrenees Highway on Thursday, has dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
