Police will be out in force on local roads this long weekend as part of Operation Nexus, targeting drivers who are drug or alcohol affected.
Victoria Police is warning motorists that officers could be anywhere at any time throughout the operation, which runs from today, Thursday, March 28 until Monday, April 1.
Police have reported a concerning spike in drivers getting behind the wheel when they’re drug or alcohol affected across the state in February and March.
In line with previous road policing operations, major roads leading to holiday hotspots will be key areas of enforcement, with the effort to include both marked and unmarked vehicles, as well as the force’s booze and drug bus fleet.
As with past operations, speeding will also be a focus for police, as well as fatigue, distraction and seatbelt compliance.
Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Glenn Weir said drivers can expect to see a strong police presence this weekend and can be breath tested at any time.
“This operation will see police out in force across the state,” he said.
“That will include local highway patrol units, the State Highway Patrol, solo units and our drug and alcohol bus fleet.
“It’s also important to remember every police car is a booze busand drivers can be breath testedat any time.
“We want everyone to survive this Easter and will be doing all we can to make sure that happens.”
Statewide, 67 lives have been lost this year compared with the 76 at this time last year.
Deaths on rural roads represent more than half of this year’s fatalities, with a total 13 lives lost over the Easter period in the last six years.
