Police investigate church theft
Police are appealing for assistance following a recent theft of multiple items from St Mary’s Church in Dunolly.
Between 3 pm on May 15, and 8.20 am on May 17, unknown offenders gained entry into the church on Hardy Street, Dunolly.
Various items of religious significance were stolen, including candelabras, vases, crucifixes and a tabernacle.
Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit Senior Constable Vincent Andreacchio said it is not believed the religious or monetary values of the items is a motive of the offence.
“We don’t think they (the offenders) were aware of any significance in terms of cost or religious value, it is not a targeted attack in terms of that,” he said.
“It was opportunistic ... the value of these item can’t be determined because they are historical, some of them being 100 years old, and they have never actually been valued, but obviously they are significant to the church.”
Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, observed any suspicious behaviour in the area, or who may have any information that could assist with investigations to contact Maryborough Police on 5460-3300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
