Paving the way forward for Maryborough’s renowned gallery, the Central Goldfields Shire Council has approved an initial plan focused on making the space “a major cultural asset”.
After being approved by councillors at last week’s ordinary council meeting, the Draft Central Goldfields Art Gallery Strategic Plan 2023-2026 will be publicly advertised for community feedback from now until June 11.
According to the report tabled at the meeting, this is the first strategic plan for the gallery and will seek to increase “community, cultural and tourism opportunities of this key facility”.
Identifying major areas of focus — the draft notes that the scope of work for the next couple of years includes developing high-quality exhibitions, delivering education and public programs, increasing marketing efforts, expanding the permanent art collection and securing sufficient resources to manage the gallery.
The report states that the draft was developed following consultation with various stakeholders involving but not limited to Asteria Services, Public Galleries Association of Victoria, local schools and educators, artists and a Dja Dja Wurrung Elder.
Speaking at the meeting, Cr Geoff Lovett said the plan was a step in the right direction for the gallery’s future.
“Following the reopening of our redeveloped art gallery, the public response has been exceptional. Public comments we’ve received about the gallery are that it is stunning,” he said.
“Two exhibitions have been held since it has reopened — the Dean Bowen and the Clayton Tremlett exhibitions. The interest in these exhibitions and attendance has been extremely impressive.
“During these early stages of our new gallery, it’s important that we get its direction and future right. The Draft Central Goldfields Art Gallery Strategic Plan is an excellent first step. Not only will this strategic plan give direction to the gallery but will create a strong partnership with our community, the various arts stakeholders and associated bodies.
“I believe putting in this draft out for public comment is a very positive move because we’re seeking feedback prior to the final strategic document being prepared for adoption. We are seeking strong input from our community.”
Once received, feedback from the community and stakeholders will be taken into consideration and if relevant, will be incorporated into the final strategic plan which will be presented to the council for endorsement in July.
