Maryborough’s improved form will be put to the test this week when they travel to second-placed Sandhurst.

The Magpies have moved into seventh position thanks to three wins in their past four games, beating Golden Square in round 12, before back-to-back victories over Eaglehawk and Strathfieldsaye throughout the last two weeks.

As a result, they now sit just half a game behind Kyneton in sixth place on the ladder, with the potential for the last round meeting between the two teams to decide who finishes best of the rest in the 2022 Bendigo Football Netball League season.

Last week’s performance against Strathfieldsaye was impressive, with the Magpies using a 17-3 final quarter to ensure they would take a convincing 23-goal victory in the end. Maggie Tranter, Tori Chandler and Jordan MacIlwain all played starring roles in the win, while Keely Hare scored 29 goals.

When Maryborough last played Sandhurst in round seven, the club was able to provide the most competitive performance out of anyone in the bottom five against the Dragons, losing 45-67.

On that occasion, Hare scored 38 goals, while Amanda Cox and Chrissy Hooper were the better performers for the afternoon.

Around the club, the team will be coming into this week’s game in good spirits, with the B reserve team and the 17 and under team recording victories against the Storm.

For the 17 and under team, they can now look towards a finals berth — however, should they beat Sandhurst this week, they will find themselves just half a game behind the Dragons for the double chance. Last time out, in a close game, the Magpies were just edged out, losing 46-48.
