Maryborough were unable to get a result over Strathfieldsaye in the A reserve competition on Saturday, and fell back to fourth position after a four-goal loss.
With Ella Patten missing due to her interleague commitments, a change was made in the defensive third with Chloe Egan taking over as goal keeper, and for a large part of the afternoon, it was a terrific defensive battle.
The Storm were able to get the jump on the Magpies, however, and scored 12 goals to nine to open up a three-goal lead at the first change. Megan Kelly scored five goals, while Jordan MacIlwain added four.
It was much the same in the second quarter. The Magpies had good opportunities to score, but the Storm were a lot more economical with their chances as they added another 12 goals to nine to lead 24-18 at the main break. Kelly scored six goals, while MacIlwain added three.
The third quarter was the most competitive of the day, with both teams scoring 12 goals apiece as the game was on the line, helping Strathfieldsaye maintain a 36-30 lead. Kelly scored nine goals, while MacIlwain added three.
Maryborough made their move in the final term, scoring nine goals to seven, but it wasn’t quite enough to overhaul the Storm, who have leapfrogged the Magpies into the double chance.
Kelly scored four goals to finish with 24 for the day, while MacIlwain added five to finish with 15.
Elsewhere, it was a tough day for the Magpies’ B grade and B reserve teams as they were overwhelmed by the Storm.
The B grade team lost 36-71, while B reserve were defeated 27-96.
The big positive for the day was Maryborough’s 17 and under team, who took a crucial victory over Strathfieldsaye, 49-38, as they moved two games clear inside the top three, in what was a critical result for their chances of securing the double chance.
