Maryborough celebrated Keely Hare’s 100th game in style with a strong 23-goal victory over Golden Square, putting them into seventh position as a result.

Coming in off a five-game skid, the Magpies took their time to get going, but once they were able to get the game on their terms, they never looked back as they took their third victory of 2022.

The first quarter saw both teams score 14 goals apiece, with Square hungry to break through for their first victory of the season.

However, thoughts of their first victory were strongly swept aside by the Magpies in the second quarter, with Hare taking control of the first half with 12 goals in the first quarter and 13 goals in the second. The Magpies, as a result, used a 21-14 second quarter to lead 35-28 at half time.

The Magpies were able to extend their lead again in the third quarter and enjoyed their best defensive quarter of the game, taking control through mid-court. They would score 19 goals to 11 to take a 54-39 lead going into the final change.

Maryborough wouldn’t let up in the final quarter, scoring 20 goals whilst restricting Square to 12 to eventually run out 74-51 winners — recording their highest tally of goals in a game this season, pleasing coach Alicia Cassidy.

Hare celebrated her 100th game with an even 50 goals, while Tori Chandler took command through mid-court, and Jordan MacIlwain ably assisted Hare in the goal circle, while helping herself to 24 goals for the afternoon.

The result meant that Maryborough were able to leapfrog Eaglehawk and Strathfieldsaye into seventh position on the ladder, and with games against both teams in the coming weeks, will look to move closer to sixth-placed Kyneton as they attempt to finish the 2022 season strongly.

Maryborough’s Keely Hare celebrated her 100th game with a familiar sight, shooting at goal over the long arms of her opponent.
