Maryborough came from behind to sneak home by a goal against Eaglehawk in what was a physical game on Saturday.

In what was a see-sawing game of momentum, the Magpies were able to lead when it mattered most, ensuring that they would take their fourth win of season 2022 and moving up to seventh on the Bendigo Football Netball League ladder as a result.

Eaglehawk enjoyed the better start, scoring 15 goals from 17 shots to open up a four-goal lead at quarter time.

The Magpies then got their game going in the second quarter. They would score from every attempt in the goal circle to outscore the Hawks 14-9 and lead by the barest of margins going into the long change, 25-24.

It was Eaglehawk’s turn to command proceedings in the third quarter, proving to be the highest scoring quarter of the day with the Hawks scoring 17 goals and the Magpies keeping in touch by scoring 13 goals, which resulted in the Hawks leading 41-38 at the final break.

The Magpies’ efficiency in front of goal proved crucial all afternoon, missing only four shots as they outscored the Hawks 13-9 in the final stanza to pinch the victory, winning 51-50.

Keely Hare led the way in scoring with 33 goals, working well in tandem with Jordan MacIlwain, who scored 17 goals. MacIlwain and Eliza Roughead caught the eye of coach Alicia Cassidy, named as their best players.

There was further cause for excitement in Maryborough’s 17 and under team, as they were also able to take an important win over Eaglehawk in the earlier game, leaving them all but a confirmed finals starter, sitting three and a half games inside the top five with just four games left.
