The Dunolly Gay Group are holding a picnic in the park event this weekend with the aim to grow a welcoming and supportive network in the town.
The group formed early last year as a way for gay men in the community to socialise and support one another, with this weekend’s event to further that cause.
The group’s John Burns said it was important for gay men to feel safe and comfortable being themselves.
“We’re no different from anyone else and I look at life like it’s not a rehearsal — we get one chance so why shouldn’t we just be ourselves,” he said.
“There are a lot of people out there who for one reason or another can’t come out or aren’t ready to come out.
“This is an event where everyone can get together and show our support for one another, it’s a simple social event.”
Mr Burns said there’s been a positive response to the event already and encouraged all members of the community to get involved.
“Maryborough’s Pride Festival went off well and this is not on that sort of scale, it’s more laid back and really just a social get together,” he said.
“If only half a dozen people turn up that’s fine but the event is open to everyone regardless of sexuality.
“There have been some really nice comments about this event which is good, we’re all about being supportive and living our lives.”
The picnic in the park event will take place in Dunolly’s Gordon Gardens this Saturday, February 25 from 5 pm onwards. There will be a barbecue and those attending are encouraged to bring their own food.
