Egan entered the game at a critical juncture, with the Magpies steamrolling the Colts’ top order and looking for the killing blow at 5/52.

As he walked to the crease hoping to bring life to the Colts’ innings alongside Dan McGregor, Egan said he adopted a simple mindset.

“My first thought was to get to drinks and then try and bat on a little bit longer,” he said.

“In the end, it was trying to score as much as you could because we were running out of overs.”

And score he did.

After getting himself acclimatised to the match, Egan and McGregor’s paramount 53-run partnership got the Colts into a defendable position.

After McGregor was sent back to the pavilion, Egan slowly dialed up the aggression, proving to be a major thorn in the Magpies’ side.

His 62 was essential to the Colts revitalising their dreams of an A reserve premiership, allowing his team to reach a strong total of 166.

Despite his heroics and the Colts’ fast start with the ball, it wasn’t meant to be, as a key partnership between Mitch Coppick and Daniel Fordham allowed Clunes to pull away.

“It’s nice to win an award but we are always about the team — I would give this back any day if we would’ve been able to win the grand final,” Egan said.

“As a club we have had a fantastic season, being able to get two sides into the grand final is very difficult in this day and age.

“Congratulations to Clunes, they batted well in the middle and deserved the win.”
