Maryborough’s Coby Perry and Kya Lanfranchi are closing in on a potential opportunity to play representative football for the Bendigo Football Netball League (BFNL), with the duo named in a 33-man training squad for their interleague match against the Victorian Amateur Football Association this week.

The game will be played at Elsternwick Park in Brighton this Saturday, with both players well in the mix to be named in the final squad, despite Maryborough’s struggles this season.

Strathfieldsaye have the most players represented in the squad, with eight selections, while league leaders Sandhurst has six selections, Golden Square five and Gisborne four.

Perry has picked the perfect time to show his wares for representative football after collecting a league-leading 49 disposals last week in wet conditions against Kangaroo Flat, with the Magpies enjoying their best performance since round two.

Perry’s personal game, which also yielded 12 clearances, has been taken to a new level this season, having broken through to get a full campaign so far, having played nine of the Magpies’ 10 games.

Lanfranchi has also enjoyed a stellar campaign in defence.

Despite the gravity of the scores the Magpies have conceded, Lanfranchi has stood tall defensively, reading the play exceptionally well and proving to be a rock defensively.

Lanfranchi again controlled the airwaves last week, taking a league-leading seven intercept marks, and 10 for the game, to go with his 23 disposals.

Last year’s best and fairest winner will again feature prominently in the votes, having been named in the best players in nine of his 10 games for the club this season.

The final team was due to be named overnight prior to going into production.

Coby Perry is still in line to capture interleague honours after being named in the training squad for the BFNL’s interleague game against the VAFA.
