Following an initial warning period in September, parking officers will now issue monetary fines to drivers who park longer than permitted on Maryborough’s main streets.

The move is part of the Central Goldfields Shire Council’s recent crackdown on motorists who leave their cars parked in the town’s CBD throughout the day, despite a one-hour time limit in place for these spots.

While officers issued only warnings last month as part of an educational grace period — from Monday, October 2, drivers not following relevant parking rules will receive infringements starting from $65 for overstaying.

“We issued approximately 170 warnings in September and we got really positive feedback from everyone and I hope that we continue to get positive results into the future as well,” council’s coordinator compliance Elizabeth Vaughan said.

“The most popular comment from the public was that they were happy to see they could get a park in the CBD now — it’s the first time they haven’t had to go around the block three or four times.”

For people looking to park for longer durations, there are two all-day carparks near High Street including one on Clarendon Street and the other accessible through Alma Street, on Nolan Lane.
