It was a successful weekend for all of Maryborough’s AFLW footballers, with Lauren Butler, Jenna Bruton and Paige Scott enjoying wins for Collingwood, North Melbourne and Essendon respectively.
Scott, in particular, wowed supporters on debut for Essendon in their inaugural AFL Women’s game at Marvel Stadium, helping the Bombers take a 26-point victory against Hawthorn.
She proved to be a crucial cog in the first quarter in particular, providing a goal assist to Jessica Wuetschner for the Bombers’ first goal in the AFLW competition before taking a strong overhead mark, converting for her first goal to help the Bombers lead at quarter time.
Scott had 10 disposals in the opening half, and finished with 16 — the second best for the team, behind superstar Madison Prespakis.
Butler’s Collingwood outfit was able to enjoy an 18-point victory over Carlton in her first game in the club’s AFLW leadership group, providing a cool and steady head for the Magpies with 15 disposals, five marks and three tackles as they powered away from the Blues in the second quarter to eventually take their first victory of the season.
For Trentham product Bruton, it was an emotional day after the recent passing of her mother, with North Melbourne wearing black armbands to honour her.
The Kangaroos reciprocated with a strong win over Gold Coast at Blundstone Arena in Hobart, with Bruton collecting 15 disposals and three tackles.
