Owls aim to keep one-day dream alive versus Bulls
After arguably their most complete performance of the season last weekend against Clunes, Beaufort eyes another statement victory at home versus Maryborough.
The Bulls looked sharp with both bat and ball throughout Saturday’s seven-wicket victory over the Magpies, possessing a level of consistency which has been bubbling at the surface all season.
Their opening bowling pair of Theo Trevelyan-Clark and David Morse did a masterful job piling on early pressure, restricting easy runs and taking valuable wickets.
Lachlan Oddie exacerbated that pressure by conceding just 10 runs from his allotted eight overs, opening the door for Brandon Walsh to take three wickets.
Jarrod Blandford once again starred with the bat for the Bulls during their run chase, finishing the innings unbeaten on 72 with seven boundaries while being well supported by Oddie’s 35.
The East Ballarat recruit has already made his mark at his new club, leading the Bulls with 225 runs with an average of over 55 and contributing six wickets.
Meanwhile, the Owls’ aspirations of making the one-day Grand Final in their return to A grade were dealt a massive blow thanks to their recent two-wicket loss to Colts Phelans.
However, with the Colts engaged in a top-of-the-table blockbuster with Laanecoorie Dunolly this weekend, Maryborough can move within three points of second if results go their way.
With clashes against Beaufort, Laanecoorie Dunolly and Carisbrook bookending their one-day regular season, Maryborough will need to maintain their form with both bat and ball if they are to run the table.
The Owls currently rank second in runs allowed and wickets taken, with Oliver Cassidy, Jasper Trickey and Jason Hunt in the top 10 league wicket-takers.
Led by openers Oliver Bennett and Ben Hoban, Maryborough also sits third in runs scored.
If the last meeting between these two teams is anything to go by, Goldfields Recreation Reserve could potentially be inundated by runs galore this Saturday.
With Hoban, Bennett, Brad Rowe and Martin Dell all scoring 40 and above, Maryborough posted their highest total of the season so far, smashing 245 despite a Trevelyan-Clark hat-trick.
The Bulls gave a good run at the sizable total with Blandford scoring 55 and Oddie smashing 74, but the Owls’ bowling attack, led by four wickets from young spinner Trickey, ensured Beaufort fell 32 runs short.
