If you’re a young person on the cusp of adulthood with a passion for local matters that impact you and your peers, there’s a seat with your name on it as part of the Ripon Youth Advisory Council — applications for which are now open.
Those aged between 16 and 18 are encouraged to put their hand up or nominate someone else with an interest in representing shared views, learning more about government, leadership, and making lasting change.
The committee will receive guidance from Member for Ripon Martha Haylett, who is spearheading the formation of the advisory body.
“During my time as the Member for Ripon, I’ve been struck by the passion of young people across our region to make change — I want to give the next generation of leaders a voice on local issues and matters that impact them,” Ms Haylett said.
“During the state election campaign in 2022, I promised to create a Ripon Youth Advisory Council if elected.
“I’m very excited to now be launching this group that will be a first of its kind in our region.
“I cannot wait to work with the group of young people to drive meaningful change together.”
Youth advisory council members may have the opportunity to:
Meet with local councillors, ministers, and not-for-profit CEOs about issues they have nominated as being of interest.
Take a leadership role in developing their own community-based initiatives focused on key issues to young people.
Participate in policy consultations on major government initiatives, as well as develop their own policy suggestions.
Students are not required to be nominated based on academic performance, but rather on their ability to use this opportunity to learn and represent the interests of their peers.
Email — Martha.Haylett@parliament.vic.gov.au to nominate yourself or someone else, by 5 pm on Friday, June 7.
