Victoria is gearing up to celebrate the contributions of its older population, with nominations for the state’s annual accolade which recognises notable senior residents now open.

Community members can now put forward the names of outstanding locals aged 60 and above for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards — with nominations accepted till the end of the month.

For more than 25 years, the awards have put a spotlight on the work done by the cohort in varying capacities including assisting and volunteering in neighbourhood houses, community groups and on social projects.

This year, the government is urging everyone to continue that legacy of honouring senior Victorians who have a made a substantial difference in their area by nominating them across multiple categories including the Premier’s Award, Promotion of Multi-culturalism Award, Healthy and Active Living Award, Veteran Community Award, Ageing Well Award and the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Awards.

The nominees — who must be Australian citizens and residing in Victoria — will be considered for all categories and will be assessed on the basis of their contribution to their respective communities since reaching the qualifying age — for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Victorians the eligible age to be nominated is 50 years and above and for the rest it remains 60.

Every nominee will receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution, and recipients of the 2023 awards will be honoured at a ceremony during the Victorian Seniors Festival this October.

Nominations are set to close on Friday, July 28 — more information as well as nomination forms can be found at www.seniorsonline.vic. gov.au/awards

The forms can be completed online and sent by email or downloaded and sent by post.

If you have a question about the awards, need a form mailed to you or help completing the nomination, you can contact the Victorian Seniors Card program on 1300 797 210.
