NEWSTEAD (39) def MALDON (36)

Newstead had to fight all the way with winless Maldon in their first-ever night match, but it was all worth it as the Kangaroos kept their finals chances alive with a three-goal win.

The Kangaroos had to weather an early storm from Maldon, before resisting a late charge to end up taking a tense victory.

Looking for their first win of the season, Maldon charged out of the blocks early, taking a two-goal lead at the first break thanks to a nine-goal to seven start.

But Newstead hit back immediately, scoring 12 goals, while holding Maldon to 10, to level the game up at the main break.

Newstead hit top gear in the third quarter, scoring 11 goals, while holding Maldon to five, to break the game open and take a six-goal lead into the final break.

Maldon charged home, scoring 12 goals to nine in the final quarter, but ultimately fell three goals short of their first win of the season.

For the Kangaroos, Verity Gartside scored 23 goals, while Alex Gilmore added a further 16 goals.

Mackenzi Shepherd scored 19 goals to lead the way for Maldon, while Zoe Backway added a further 17.
