Newstead finished full of running against Royal Park, with a big final quarter giving the Kangaroos a 49-point success.

It was a high-quality game over the first three quarters, with both teams throwing everything at the cause.

The Kangaroos got off to the ideal start when they kicked four goals in the first quarter to Bushy’s three to lead by 10 points at the first change.

The second quarter was a beauty — in all 10 goals were scored, but it was the Kangaroos who added to their lead, kicking six goals, while the Tigers added four, helping Newstead lead by 21 at the main break.

The third quarter was a battle, with Bushy trying to get back into the game, while Newstead were determined to keep them at arms length.

It was the latter who were successful in their endeavours, with both teams adding two goals apiece to leave the margin at 21 heading into the final quarter.

Newstead’s efforts were worth it, with the Kangaroos putting on a show for their supporters in the last quarter, kicking six goals to two to break the game open, and would eventually go on to win comfortably.

Playing-coach Joel Smith had a fantastic outing for the Kangaroos, putting in a best-on-ground outing with three goals, while Mitch Hough, Bradley Richardson, Anthony Robins and Todd Delahey — who was equal top-scorer for the Roos with four goals — also stood out. Tyler James continued his good form in 2023, adding another four goals.

Royal Park were led admirably by Karson Guareschi, who kicked six goals, while Lachlan Bates continued his standout season, alongside Jack Broad, Matt Walker and Michael Epworth.
