Newstead take care of Campbells Creek 65-34
A 33-12 second half has guided Newstead to their third win of the season, defeating a valiant Campbells Creek 65-34.
Both teams hosted a season debut in this clash, with Zoe Douglass coming in to bolster the Steaders’ defence, while Paige Langley looked to make a difference in the Magpies’ attacking goal circle.
Newstead got off to a flying start on their home court, seemingly poised to put the game out of reach early with a 6-0 run to begin the contest.
Despite the early setback, the Magpies rallied quickly, keeping the gap down to six by quarter time.
Newstead’s Tayla Gale was causing trouble for the Campbells Creek defence, her off-the-ball movement placed her in the prime position for her 10 shots, scoring nine. Jury was even more potent in the first quarter, converting all seven of her goal attempts.
After some early hiccups, Jemma Finning directed the Magpies with six goals in the opening term, while Langley started well with four goals.
Despite the long-range passing prowess of Jessica Currie and Katie Tong allowing their offence to score rather frequently, the Steaders couldn’t quite shake the Magpies off, settling for a 10 goal lead at the main break.
Jury and Gale were at their best in the second quarter, combining for 16 goals from just 19 attempts in the second period.
Keen to remain competitive, midcourters Taylah Sartori and Ella Cochrane ensured Finning and Langley had a constant stream of chances, as Finning netted eight and Langley added four.
Despite the Magpies’ best efforts to remain competitive, the Steaders began to seize control of the match in the second half, stifling Campbells Creek to five third-quarter goals to balloon the margin out to 21 goals at the final break.
After a spell of early dominance, Douglass and Tahni Clark imposed their control in the third period, making life difficult for Finning and Langley in the goal circle. Finning was able to score four while Langley netted one.
While they slightly cooled from their electric first-half shooting percentage, Gale and Jury kept Newstead’s offence rolling, scoring eight goals each in the third period.
The Steaders completed the final touches of their victory with a 17-7 final quarter, remaining in control of their finals destiny with a 65-34 win.
Gale and Jury showcased why they are one of the most formidable shooting tandems in the MCDFNL, providing a consistent supply of scoring with Gale finishing on 34 and Jury close behind on 31.
Finning extended her good run of form, scoring 22 goals from 30 attempts while Langley finished with 12 goals after a promising first half.
