Newstead take a hard-fought victory versus the Magpies
After a somewhat shaky start, Newstead kicked into gear late against a fighting Campbells Creek, registering their third win of the season thanks to a 33-point victory.
The Steaders took full advantage of their home oval in the first quarter, with Nicholas Woodman and Joel Smith open finding space along the wings to attack the Magpies’ defence.
That resulted in Ben Moran and Jonty Entwisle slotting two early goals for the hosts, and it seemed that Newstead would cruise to an early victory.
However, Campbells Creek held firm, starting to hold possession more frequently as the quarter progressed, keeping the deficit to 22 points.
The second quarter was a battle in the trenches, with both teams struggling to get first use of the football.
Despite the efforts of captain Kyle Gellatly and Dylan Stevens in the midfield for the visitors, Smith and Michael Dalrymple were giving more chances for their forwards to put the game out of reach.
However, some poor finishing led to a 1.5 second quarter for the Steaders, keeping Campbells Creek in the contest with a 33-point deficit at half time.
The Magpies took full advantage of the Steaders’ inaccuracy going forward in the third quarter, as Mitchell Stevens and Nicholas O’Brien started to drive the underdogs forward.
Despite having three fewer scoring shots, the Magpies outscored Newstead 2.1 to 0.6 in the third term, sitting only 26 points behind at three-quarter time.
Even with second-half goals from Matthew Cox, Hadley Bassett, Thomas Langley, Harley Melrose and Dylan Stevens, Campbells Creek couldn’t keep pace with Bradley Richardson, who carried the Steaders’ offence with four goals to ensure victory.
For his ball-winning ability in the midfield, Dalrymple was named the host’s best player, and he was joined by Smith, Richardson, Jedd Pedretti, Nicholas Woodman and Ethan Maltby.
Gellatly was named among the best players for the visitors for the sixth time this season, named alongside Dylan Stevens, Mitchell Stevens, O’Brien, Jamie Benbow and Cox.
