Newstead produce masterclass at Creek’s expense
Newstead earned itself a valuable percentage booster in their quest to finish inside the top four, defeating a competitive Campbells Creek by 114 points.
The Steaders’ leading goal-kicker, Sam Winnard, bagged another half-dozen on Saturday, leading a parade of seven players to hit the scoresheet multiple times.
The Magpies defenders would be forgiven if they suddenly were thinking about vehicle and window repairs, as O’Brien’s Lachlan and Liam ended with a combined seven goals.
Isaac Fofana also had his most prolific game up forward for Newstead, adding three majors.
Despite ending with a staggering 25 goals, Newstead struggled to fully capitalise on their early opportunities, with Mitchell Stevens and Tyson Williams routinely disrupting their attacks inside 50.
After kicking 4.8 to Campbells Creek’s 1.3 in the opening term, the Steaders looked to extend their margin in the second quarter with five well-worked goals.
However, even with star on-baller Jack Larkin unavailable, Isaac Fletcher, Dylan Stevens, Jamie Benbow and James Haber were holding their own against Newstead’s stacked midfield.
With three goals of their own, Campbells Creek trailed by a respectable 37 points at half time and continued to pester Newstead with another strong third quarter performance.
Yet the Magpies began to struggle containing the Steaders’ offensive arsenal, with William Moran, Joel Smith and Lincoln White all proving dangerous with the ball in their hands.
After stretching their lead to 50 points at three-quarter time, Newstead put on a clinic for their home supporters in the final term.
It was raining goals at Newstead Recreation Reserve during the fourth quarter, with the Steaders slotting an exhilarating 11 majors to burst the margin well past triple digits before the final siren.
Newstead named Lachlan O’Brien, Fofana, Liam O’Brien, Michael Dalrymple, Winnard and Adam Hunter as their best players as they now set their sights on an intriguing clash with Talbot.
The final margin doesn’t fully illustrate how competitive Campbells Creek was throughout the afternoon, led superbly by captain Dylan Stevens, who kicked three goals.
He was joined by Fletcher, Haber, Mitchell Stevens and Williams in the Magpies’ best players, while Joel Wootton chipped in with two goals.
