Newstead navigate late Avoca surge in 32-point victory
Avoca and Newstead met for the 25th time when they played at Newstead Recreation Reserve on Saturday and the home team had a comfortable victory, winning for the 16th time by 32 points.
Newstead remain in eighth on the ladder, just two points clear of Maldon and Lexton who are knocking on the door for finals.
The Bulldogs have had several injuries this season, and they were also missing their captain, Darcy Carey.
Newstead also had their share of injuries this season, but showed they were up and about with seven shots on goal to three in the first quarter to lead by 19 points at the first break in play.
At three-quarter time, Newstead was coasting to victory as they led by 43 points going into the final quarter.
However, the Bulldogs produced some quality football in the latter stages, booting six final-quarter goals.
Newstead also slotted four goals as the home team ended the match as convincing winners.
Hayden Hall and Joel Smith were the chief playmakers for the Steaders, and others to play well were Harry McGuire, Jovian Goulton, Michael Runciman and Nicholas Woodman.
Byron Wynd was named the best player for Avoca, joined by Zachary Lubeek, Alex Riches, Jordan Thomas, Lachlan and Mitch Wardlaw.
