NEWSTEAD (39) def DUNOLLY (31)
Newstead took an important step towards a finals berth, while simultaneously all but ending Dunolly’s hopes, with an eight-goal victory at home on Saturday.
The win sees the Kangaroos hop into seventh position on the ladder, overtaking Maldon, while the losses suffered by Royal Park and Campbells Creek meant that they are now six points clear inside the eight.
In what was a largely defensive affair, the Steaders got the jump, scoring 10 goals to five to open up a five-goal break at quarter time.
Goals were hard to come by in the second quarter — Newstead added seven, while Dunolly added eight to close the margin by a goal, with the Steaders leading 17-13 at half time.
The third quarter saw the Steaders put the Eagles away, scoring 11 goals while restricting Dunolly to five. That allowed them to take a 28-18 lead at the final change.
Despite Dunolly having their best quarter of the day, scoring 13 goals, the Steaders proved too good, scoring 11 goals to run out 39-31 winners.
The Steaders were well-served by Layla Benson-Zepnick, Lisa Britt and Renee Ramsey, with Verity Gartside scoring 27 goals.
Dunolly’s best were Ashlee Lierich and Avril Price, while a player not in the system was their leading scorer with 17 goals, with Samantha Cheetham contributing 14 goals.
