Newstead gained the upper hand early in the contest at Avoca on Saturday and managed to stave off a late challenge by the Bulldogs to win by 14 points.
Newstead was quick out of the blocks and their first two quarters had the Bulldogs chasing. The game seemed to be well in the Roos’ keeping at half time when they led by 36 points.
Bulldogs coach Zack Lubeek must have given an inspiring speech at half time, as it was a completely different Bulldogs unit that took the field and the Bulldogs won the second half, kicking six goals to two.
However, despite winning the second half, they did not win the game and the Bulldogs will be disappointed they let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers. An undisciplined act may also have been costly as an Avoca player was red carded leaving the Bulldogs one man short in the final term.
Newstead’s better players were Anthony Robins, Cordie McKendry, Alex Murphy, Rhys Smith, Dylan Gordois and Harrison McGuire, with Tyler James kicking three goals.
Avoca named Brayden Northern, Bryce Howell, Clayton Winter, Sean Moyle, Scott Cawthan and Cameron Holland with Nathan Coghlan Kicking three goals.
Newstead will need all hands on deck as they face up to third placed Carisbrook.
The winless Avoca will now head to Deledio Oval to tackle the Eagles who are sitting in fifth place.
