Newstead moved to 3-1, but did so after surviving an almighty fight from Avoca.

Like the week before against Lexton, the Bulldogs came out a different outfit on their home deck, and were able to take it right up to the Kangaroos.

Three goals apiece in the opening quarter suggested the game was going to be played at a breakneck pace all afternoon, and it certainly didn’t let up, with the Kangaroos adding four goals in the second, while the Bulldogs added three, to leave the former leading by four points at the main break.

The third quarter saw the Kangaroos kick away, kicking another four goals, while holding the Bulldogs to two. It saw them hold a 19-point lead at the main break.

However, the Bulldogs kept pushing, and were able to reduce the margin to five points during the last quarter.

The Kangaroos held their nerve with the last two goals of the contest to eventually take a 13-point victory.

Harrison McGuire, Cordie McKendry, Brendan McDougall, Bradley Richardson, Anthony Robins and Steven Shovan were the main ports of call for the Kangaroos, while Tyler James had his second-consecutive five-goal haul.

Avoca’s better players were Tyson Cope, Tyson Gray, Daniel Howell, Darcy Carey and Bryce Howell, while Jason Hunt was another to shine, kicking three.
