Before the game commenced, Newstead held a ceremony around the timekeeper’s box unveiling a plaque naming the box the Jim Trudgeon/Dick Burgess time box in honour of the many years of service these men have given as timekeepers for the Newstead Football Netball Club.

While the scoreboard indicates a one-sided game, that was not the case, as the Hawks had to fight hard for their victory.

Talbot jumped out of the blocks to kick six goals in the opening quarter, while Newstead scored their only goal after the siren through Jonty Entwisle.

Livewire Zac Cicchini kicked the opening goal of the game and slotted three more for the term.

The remainder of the game was a closely contested match.

Newstead reduced the margin to 13 points twenty minutes into the second term, but they were finding Jarrod Stephens hard to contain.

The big forward kicked his third goal a minute later, and then Cicchini hit Daniel Romeo with an amazing precision pass and he kicked truly for the Hawks to have a 25-point half time lead.

It was goal for goal in the third term, with Stephens goaling for the Hawks just two minutes into the third quarter, he was quickly answered by a Hayden Hall goal from a free kick.

At the 15-minute mark, Newstead’s Nick Lord goaled from a 50-metre penalty courtesy of an infringement from Hawks ruckman Michael Sikora, but the dynamic duo of Stephens and Cicchini kicked two more goals for the Hawks to lead by 29 points at the final break.

Another goal for goal quarter in the final term, but the game was already in the bag for Talbot, who kicked two goals in red time through Romeo and Adam Scott.

Jude McGuire played another inspiring game for the Hawks, as did Stephens with five goals and Zac Cicchini with four goals.

Others named the best players were Darcy Osborne, Matthew York and Luke Kemp.

Newstead named Hayden Hall, Ethan Maltby, Brad Richardson, Angus Mayes, Ben Moran and Nick Woodman.
