Newstead books finals spot with big win over Campbells Creek
NEWSTEAD 20.13 (133) def CAMPBELLS CREEK 1.3 (9)
Newstead had a very comfortable 124-point victory over Campbells Creek on Saturday, with full forward Tyler James snagging seven goals in the win.
A five-goal opening term to the home team set the scene, but it was followed up with a nine-goal second quarter to seal the game at half time.
Creek could only manage to score one major for the day which was kicked in the second quarter by Joel Wootton.
Unfortunately, the result seals a second consecutive winless season for the Magpies, but they can take solace in almost tripling their percentage this season, while doubling their scoring output and taking 900 points against them compared to the 2023 season.
Newstead spearhead James, thanks to his seven goals, finished the home and away season in third position on the goal kicking table with 58 goals for the season.
The Steaders were dominant in all areas of the ground, especially out of the centre square where Hayden Hall continued his good work along with Anthony Robins, while Michael Runciman had another good day in front of the goals, kicking four for the game.
The result means Newstead will now take on Dunolly in the first week of the finals at Princes Park next week, in their first finals meeting since the 2009 decider.
Newstead named their best players as James, Rhys Smith, Hall, Robins, James Mitchelhill, and Angus Mayes.
Creek’s better players were Kyle Gellatly, Hadley Basset, James Martinovic, Nick O’Brien, Dylan Stevens and Justin Allison.
