Newstead took charge of their clash with Maldon after quarter time, boosting their finals chances with a 22-goal victory to move up to sixth on the ladder ahead of their bye this week.
All told, it was an impressive victory from the Kangaroos, who were able to bounce back from consecutive losses to Avoca and Carisbrook.
The first quarter was the tightest of the day, with Newstead scoring 12 goals and Maldon 11. For the Kangaroos, Tayla Gale was proving to be a dominant force in the goal circle, getting many opportunities and scoring seven goals, while Bri Jury added five goals. For Maldon, Ainsley Taft scored eight goals, and Katie Tong three.
It was the second quarter where Newstead started to motor, and knuckled down in front of goal, while also controlling the midcourt movement. As a result, they added 15 goals for the second term, while holding Maldon to nine to lead 27-20 at the main break. Gale added 11 goals for the Roos, while Jury added four. Maldon had three goal scorers for the term, with Taft scoring on three occasions, Tong twice, and Emma Webb four times.
The Kangaroos continued to dictate terms in the third quarter, and were able to add another 14 goals to eight to ensure they would all-but seal the four points, leading 41-28 at the final change. Jury scored eight goals, while Gale added six for the Roos, and for the Dons, Taft scored five and Webb three.
It was all the Roos in the last term as the resistance was broken, scoring 13 goals to four to eventually take a comfortable victory, giving them a much-needed boost to their percentage in the process. Gale scored six goals to take her tally to 30 goals for the day, ably supported by Jury, who added seven to finish with 24 for the day for the Roos. Taft finished with four goals in the last quarter to make it 20 goals for the day.
The Roos now have the week off, while the Dons face a must-win when they host the winless Lions as they look to keep track with the top eight.
