New staff for Powercor have started

CitiPower and Powercor’s ‘Class of 2025’ has officially begun, with 37 new apprentices and trainees now learning the skills they’ll need to help maintain a safe and reliable power network for Victorians.

Selected from over 1200 applicants, the recruits come from diverse backgrounds such as school leavers, glass blowers, carpenters, electricians, and even circus performers.

They range in age from 18 to 44 and will be based across regional and metropolitan locations, in-cluding Bendigo, Ballarat, Mildura, Kyneton, Echuca, Shepparton, Maryborough, Warrnambool, Colac, Horsham, Geelong, Brooklyn, Burnley, and Melbourne’s CBD.

The group includes six women, building on the growing number of female tradies joining the business in what has been a traditionally male-dominated industry.

Head of operations and delivery, Barry David, said the annual apprentice and trainee intake was the only chance to join a Victorian electricity network directly as part of an in-house field team.

“It’s already been a big summer for our field teams and these new recruits are joining an energetic team dedicated to keeping the lights on for our communities,” he said.

“Our apprenticeship program is about building the next generation of our workforce — people who play an essential role in providing safe and reliable power to homes and businesses.”

Recruits have been placed in a range of roles, including:

• 21 overhead lineworkers

• Five electrical fitters

• Three underground cable

jointers

• One meter technician

• Four designer trainees

• Two asset inspector trainees

• One No Go Zone trainee

A mentor is assigned to each recruit to help guide them through their course and on-the-job training.

“We’ve selected people with a positive attitude, who are community and customer minded, put safety first and who are eager to learn,” Mr David said.

CitiPower and Powercor’s apprenticeship program has been running for more than 20 years, with more than 500 apprentices completing the program and more than 100 apprentices currently part of the workforce.

The 2026 apprentice intake will open later this year.
