A secret buried beneath the Victorian goldfields and a government working to cover it up is the premise of Majorca resident Craig Ellery’s new book, Truth Be Told.
Written by Mr Ellery late last year and published by Harvest Publishing under the pseudonym Vince Craig just a few months ago, the action/thriller novel is described as authentic and adventurous, with familiar Australian places, particularly locally, making it an enticing read.
Truth Be Told is Mr Ellery’s first novel, with all 270 of its pages written during an 11-week period last year and was inspired by his move to Majorca in 2020.
“Basically I moved to Majorca in 2020 and I wasn’t aware of the rich history of the area — I felt there was something that had to be written about it,” he said.
“Since I’ve been in Majorca, the things you can find out there are amazing — there is so much rich history and I think the geography of the area was a big thing in me wanting the book to be set in the central goldfields.
“Everybody’s got a story and I think it’s important those are put out there.”
Truth Be Told follows the story of a gold prospector who discovers an underground secret that entangles friends and foes in a battle of wits and dangerous encounters.
Mr Ellery said the novel’s plot has something for everyone, with the book’s main character likely to appear in future works.
“It’s a decent story, it concerns secrets and is an eye-opener — there’s a bit of everything in the book,” he said.
“Basically there’s a guy called Danny who’s a prospector and while prospecting, he falls down a mine shaft and is trying to get out when he finds an entrance to a cavern.
“He follows that and inside this cavern, there are shipping containers set up as a laboratory and the story goes from there.
“People who have read the book have said the characters are realistic and it’s something that would look good on film so we’ll see what the future brings.”
Mr Ellery has been in conversation with staff at the Maryborough Regional Library regarding a book launch which is likely to take place in the coming weeks.
