A new Australia-wide Fire Danger Rating System is set to come into effect from September this year to ensure locals and those travelling around the country can stay up-to-date with the latest warnings.

The system is a new and updated way of determining and communicating fire danger ratings and will be implemented across the country, so those at home or travelling will see the same rating system, bringing national consistency to the public display of ratings.

The new system will feature four ratings (reduced from the current six) with recommended actions for each level so residents will know what to do to protect themselves, their family and property.

The four levels are:

• Moderate — plan and prepare
• High — be ready to act
• Extreme — take action now to protect your life and property
• Catastrophic — for your survival, leave bushfire risk areas.

The existing fire danger ratings have been largely unchanged for more than 50 years, and the new system has been developed using the latest science to deliver more accurate, relevant and timely information to where individuals live.

Community feedback was also used in the design process to help make it easier to understand and to provide clearer advice.

Australians will be able to check the daily fire danger for their area on the CFA website, local Fire Danger Rating signs and the VicEmergency smartphone app.

The new system will come into effect from September this year.
