One of Victoria’s new mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras was spotted on the Pyrenees Highway in Carisbrook last week. The cameras detect drivers who use portable devices, like mobile phones, behind the wheel, and those who aren’t wearing seatbelts.
The cameras use AI technology to capture high-resolution images of vehicles and detect offences. The current penalty for using a mobile phone while driving is a $577 fine and four demerit points. For failing to wear a seatblet the fine is $385 and 3 demerit points.
The camera roll out follows the Victorian Government’s trial of the new system between April and May this year, where more than 7000 offences were detected.
