Georgie Allan’s 16 and under Maryborough Giants team put the icing on the cake of a fantastic winter season in the Maryborough Netball Association, winning Tuesday’s grand final versus Talbot.

The first season finale pitted the Maryborough Magpies against the Talbot Hawks in a battle of the birds for the 13 and under premiership.

The Magpies started the game strongly with some brilliant intercepts across the court, helping them be in front 7-4 after a back-and-forth first quarter.

They went on to take full advantage of their early lead, pulling away in the second quarter thanks to some great passing and shooting to extend the margin to 10 goals at half time.

The Hawks brought the fight to the Magpies in the second half, but couldn’t make any inroads on their deficit, with the Magpies claiming the premiership by 10 goals.

Maryborough Magpies shooter/ midcourter Evie Ross was named best on court.

Despite the defeat, Talbot still had a chance to take home a premiership, facing another Maryborough-based team in the Giants in the 16 and under grand final.

Both teams traded momentum in the opening 10 minutes, entering quarter time gridlocked at eight apiece.

After the short break, the Maryborough Giants grabbed the first few goals of the second quarter and never looked back, eventually taking a 10-goal lead into half time.

Talbot couldn’t find a way to slow their opponents down in the second half as the Giants cruised to a 48-22 victory.

With several game-changing intercepts, the Giants’ Mia Smith was named best on court to go along with her premiership medal.
