Trentham’s Joel Dovaston spins out of trouble.

It was billed as one of the key clashes of the early stages of the season, and Saturday’s game between Natte Bealiba and Trentham lived up to the hype, with key momentum swings and quality football lighting up CHS Broadbent Oval, with the Swans winning by 19 points.

The victory for the Swans was the first win for the club against Trentham since the 2019 qualifying final, and ensured that they remained unbeaten ahead of what is now a fascinating clash with the in-form Maryborough Giants when both teams return from the general bye in two weeks’ time.

Trentham came into this game in strong form after recording a season-high 35 goals the previous week against Campbells Creek, and looked to carry that form into this game against the Swans as they kicked four of the first five goals of the game.

But the Swans seemed to slowly work their way into the game, and a late goal at the first change meant they sat 10 points behind.

There was a breeze favouring the paddock end of the ground, and the Swans took full advantage of it in the second term as they overhauled the Saints, kicking six goals to two to turn their quarter time deficit into a 16-point half time lead.

Trentham weren’t going to die wondering, and their midfield power stepped up in the third term to bring the Saints back into the game, kicking the only two goals of the quarter to reduce the margin to four points at the last change.

With the game on the line, the Swans stepped it up and took advantage of their chances, kicking four goals, while Trentham were able to generate plenty of scoring opportunities, but could only finish with one goal from seven scoring shots, with the Swans holding firm to win by 19 points, 12.12 (84) to 9.11 (65).

It was a terrific battle of the midfield, with both teams undoubtedly looking to play a starring role in this year’s finals series. One would expect that it wouldn’t be the last meeting between the two teams this year.

Jai Howell, however, was the key to the game for the Swans, putting together his most complete performance since joining them, kicking two goals to prove a significant factor. Jake Postle was another to shine for Natte Bealiba, with Jordi Cossar, Trent Mortlock, Will Holt and Keynan Lanfranchi also named in the best.

Jake Keogh was outstanding for Trentham, moving through the midfield at will throughout the afternoon, as was reigning Berry Powell medallist Joel Cowan. Harrison Knight, Zach Gervasoni, Hugo Hall and Bryce Hinneberg were also named in their best players.
