Nationals appoint new leader
Just days after taking over the party reigns the Victorian Nationals new leader Danny O’Brien visited Maryborough, reaffirming The Nationals’ commitment to regional communities.
Member for Gippsland South and Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety, as well as Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Mr O’Brien replaced outgoing Nationals leader Peter Walsh, who held office for the past decade.
During his visit to Maryborough on Friday, Mr O’Brien said the party will be looking to address a raft of issues both at a local and state level, ranging from poor road conditions to supporting jobs and economic growth.
“Specifically at a local level, we are very proud of the Go Goldfields program we funded when we were in government and that’s now under threat due to a lack of funding,” he said.
“We want to make sure there are economic opportunities for people to not just get jobs, but good jobs, and previously we’ve had the Economic Development Fund which has supported several local businesses and enterprises.
“There is an opportunity for the State Government to assist the private sector to develop in regional areas and Maryborough is one of those areas that historically, had a manufacturing heart.
“We’d like to see new opportunities come forward locally both for businesses but also individuals and we’ll certainly be back in Maryborough doing our best to win people’s support, and also advocate for them.”
