A three panel display depicting the diverse essence of Avoca will be put up outside the town’s pool later this year — with the artwork featuring a mix of young and mature talent.
The Avoca Friends of the Pool have been working on the mural since January, aiming to cover two large brick walls standing bare at the entrance of the local swimming pool.
“We started working on these panels after the youth committee of the pool asked us if we could make these walls more interesting,” the group’s Joan Quinlan said.
“With the panels, we thought that if ever the entrance needed to be upgraded, we could simply remove the panels, preserving the artwork, and put them back on after.
“Work on the mural started earlier this year — each panel has taken three sessions and we’ve been organising these sessions in the school holidays so we’ve had help from a lot of students who have been working with local artists.”
With about 25 students from the Avoca Primary School as well as from the Maryborough Education Centre contributing to the mural, Ms Quinlan said the project has been a real community initiative.
“Everyone is working together to create this display, young people don’t often get to work with artists like this so it’s really fantastic,” she said.
“The idea for the artwork on the panels also came from the students — they were asked what images best represent their idea of Avoca and then one of the supervising artists, Brian Armstrong, went through all the images and sorted them into three categories.
“So the first panel looks at Avoca’s environment, the second is more about the local school and its surroundings and the third shows the farms and vineyards around Avoca.”
The project is expected to be unveiled at the start of the swimming season in December at the entrance of the Avoca pool on Rutherford Street and Pyrenees Highway.
