The Maryborough Lady Blazers were the recipient of more post-season honours as the Country Basketball League’s North West division wrapped up last weekend.

Following on from Maddy Egan gaining selection in the All-Star Five team on Monday, Elisa Pica was able to share in defensive player of the year honours, earning the award alongside Bendigo’s Meg McCarthy on Tuesday.

Pica was integral in ensuring that guards were unable to score at will against the Lady Blazers throughout the season, finishing with the third-best defensive record in the competition, while also proving to be a solid contributor on the offensive end, recording 41 points across the season from her eight games, proving to be a consistent two-way player all season long.

Lady Blazers’ playing coach Claire Blower was also rewarded for her consistent season on Wednesday, earning the scoring title for her dominant play in the paint.

Blower averaged 21.3 points per game, which included five games that saw her score above 20 points for the season.

A 25-point game to open the season against the Macedon Ranges Rockies was a sign of things to come, as she would then drop a season-high 28 against the Bacchus Marsh Lions in their second game, followed by 24 points against the Melton Thoroughbreds.

After making the All-Star Five team, Egan was in the running to win the North West Women MVP title, but ultimately just missed out, with the title going to Kyneton’s Michelle Fletcher.
