2022 was a big year for the Central Goldfields Masonic Group (CGMG), with scholarship amounts increased and more handed out to local students than ever before.
Highview College year 10 student Silas, aiming to study astrophysics and become a professor in the field, was selected for the major Freemasons Regional VCE Scholarship and Khoa Do — aiming to achieve high results for his studies, and promoting youth in the Central Goldfields Shire as youth mayor — was selected from MEC and awarded the second VCE years award provided by CGMG with funds matched by the Freemasons Foundation.
“The selection criteria of academic achievement, community involvement, desire to make a worthwhile contribution to society and performance at our scholarship interview helps the selection panel and make a difficult job somewhat easier,” CGMG chairman Ken Calder said.
The CGMG Freemasons Primary School Scholarships provided locally were again increased both in number and value in 2022.
The primary scholarships are awarded to the year six student each school’s principal and year six teacher feels will make the most use of their educational opportunities, with the funds deposited to their secondary school account.
Starting in 2018 with 11 awards worth $100 each, these have now increased to 18 scholarships valued at $300, awarded to students at Avoca, Bealiba, Carisbrook, Clunes, Dunolly, Inglewood, MEC, Moonambel, Natte Yallock, Newstead, St Augustines, Talbot, Tarnagulla, Timor, Wedderburn and Yandoit primary schools.
The Freemasons’ aim is to increase these numbers further in 2023.
