It was a mixed weekend for the Maryborough Blazers as they made the trek down to a strong Melton Thoroughbreds outfit.

A Maddison Egan-inspired Lady Blazers were able to maintain their unbeaten record as they recorded a 89-76 victory.

It was a struggle for supremacy early, with the first half going back and forth in momentum swings between both teams. The Lady Blazers were able to take a five-point lead at the first change thanks to a 21-16 quarter, but Melton were able to hit back in the second with a 25-16 quarter to ensure they would be 41-37 leaders at half time.

However, the third quarter belonged to Egan and the Lady Blazers. Egan poured in 19 points for the quarter, helping the Lady Blazers gain control with a 35-10 period to ensure they would lead 72-51 at the final change.

Melton were able to finish strongly with a 25-17 final quarter, but it mattered little as the Lady Blazers kept their unbeaten record and stayed on top of the ladder.

The day belonged to Egan, who scored 31 points to guide the Lady Blazers, while Claire Blower continued her consistent season with 24 points, with Millie Cracknell also contributing with 15 points.

The Blazers fell to their first loss of the Country Basketball League season when they lost 83-65.

Much like the women’s game that preceded it, the first half was a struggle for both teams as neither could establish a strong lead. It was Maryborough that got off to the stronger start, leading by three points at quarter time thanks to a 15-12 run, before Melton hit back with a 22-18 second quarter to take a 34-33 lead into half time.

However, it was all the Thoroughbreds in the third quarter, with a 32-18 period giving them the ascendancy and going into the final change leading 66-51.

It proved to be too much work for Maryborough, who could not overcome the deficit, with a 17-14 quarter seeing Melton maintain their unbeaten record.

Brady Neill led the way for the Blazers with 20 points, while Rhys Brown contributed with 17 points.

At this stage, pending any fixture changes to factor in delayed games, both Blazers teams will have the bye in round six.
