The Mill House’s bright new interior almost makes the space unrecognisable, following extensive upgrades throughout the building.

The site has seen new flooring, blinds, and an indoor mural painted over an entire hallway.

The Mill House sees up to 100 people through its doors each week, all attending a vast array of programs and events. This could include workshops, Dungeons and Dragons clubs, playgroups, book clubs, U3A sessions, the computer room, or community information and referral services.

The Mill House’s Cathy Schwager said it was time for the building to see some internal upgrades.

“We have been trying to fix things up to make things look better and more professional, just to improve the place and make it feel nicer,” she said.

Much of the building has been unchanged since it was opened over thirty years ago, and staff felt modernising their much-used facilities was long overdue.

To replace the carpet, new floorboards have been put down, making the space far easier to maintain.

“The offices also have thirty-year-old carpet, so a couple of our young volunteers helped us pull it up. We also had a donation of carpet squares that we put into five of the offices, that’s a temporary fix until we get further funding to fix the rest of the building,” Ms Schwager said.

Staff said the new curtains will prevent all spaces, including the dining room, from overheating in the summer.

Some rooms previously had no blinds at all.

Mill House’s hallway also has a new mural, one of the first projects by a young local artist, to match the exterior murals.

“It does make a difference to the space, we wanted it to be cleaner, friendlier and more inviting, because we do get a fair few people in each day,” Ms Schwager said.

“There’s heaps going on, and it improves every day, and to improve the facilities is huge. So donations and grants are what keeps us going,” she said.

Mill House staff said local businesses have gone above and beyond to assist with their long process of upgrading the site, crediting Goldfields Screens and Blinds and Maryborough Flooring for their monumental effort in the community space’s new look.

Mill House’s Sarah McLean and Cathy Schwager said new blinds throughout the building will greatly improve temperature control. 100326 04
