Midwifery to be celebrated
MDHS encourages locals to get involved this International Day of the Midwife.
Every birth signifies the start of a new story. For hundreds of local families, that story began at the Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS).
“Midwives are there for life’s first breaths, first cries and the first moments of family,” said Penny Browne, Women and Children’s Services Manager, MDHS.
“We want to celebrate the incredible work of our midwives and the beautiful community we’ve built together.”
MDHS is inviting local families to celebrate International Day of the Midwife on Monday, May 5 at The Nest from 2 to 3 pm.
“This year’s theme is ‘Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis.’ It recognises the essential role midwives play not just in safe births, but in the stability and strength of communities during times of change and challenge,” MDHS’ Debbie Rogers, chief midwife and executive director of care said.
“I am extremely proud of our team of Midwives and the care they provide to women and their families throughout the pregnancy journey.
“Working alongside Obstetricians and GP Obstetricians, our Midwives ensure evidence-informed, safe maternity care.
“Our new maternity unit is now open and we are all extremely excited to welcome our first mother and baby into the new labour and birth suites.
“May 5 gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the work our Midwives do, thank them and celebrate with them.”
The health service encourages residents to come along and reconnect with midwives, and share stories and celebrate the care provided through the local maternity service.
“All families who have been part of the MDHS maternity journey are invited including babies, toddlers and grandparents,” Ms Browne said.
“Care partners, such as maternal and child health nurses, are also welcome.”
A photo board will be displayed on the day, showcasing memories from families who’ve welcomed their babies with MDHS.
Photos can be sent in advance or brought on the day with a simple consent form provided for inclusion in the display. Light refreshments will be served.
The celebration will take place next Monday, May 5 from 2 pm at The Nest, located at 91 Nolan Street, Maryborough.
