Midweek pennant ladder as tight as ever
The top four are separated by just 12 points, and it’s anyone’s game to take top spot on the ladder going into round four.
Dunolly Blue held out Highland Gold to take a 54-50 victory.
The ladder-leaders now hold a seven-point lead on top of the ladder, but they most certainly did not have it all their own way throughout the morning on Tuesday.
Chris Williams took a 22-13 win over Jeanette Oliver, while Tony Galofaro and Roy Crawley couldn’t be split on 18 shots apiece. Paul Gothard scored a rink for Gold with a 19-14 win over Alan Weir, but it wasn’t enough to overhaul the gap.
Highland Tartan appear to be warming into the season courtesy of an 83-27 win over Maryborough Golf.
They now move into third as a result of the win, which saw them take all three rinks throughout.
Garry Coburn defeated Liz Bucknall 26-10, while Greg Shay defeated Kort Gay 21-13. Michael Fryar’s dominant 36-4 win over Graeme Orr allowed Highland Tartan to boost their percentage in the process.
Talbot currently sit second thanks to their 68-38 win over Carisbrook.
A dominant 29-7 win by Ray Prentice over Judy Cassidy was of great importance for Talbot, and Barb Crossley’s 22-13 win over Laurence Cassidy helped cement their lead. Phillip Burt prevented a sweep, however, by defeating Chris Crossley 18-17.
Avoca took their first win of the season, defeating Dunolly Gold 73-54.
The result moves Avoca into sixth position, and they largely dominated across the greens, with Daniel Giddings taking a 31-10 win over Fabio Delconte and Ian Proctor winning 24-18 over Jim Haigh. Wayne Stephens did give Dunolly Gold a rink with a 26-18 win over Noel Parratt.
Moving into round four, any one of four teams can assume top spot on the ladder depending on results.
However, Dunolly Blue will still be favoured to end the round on top as they take on stablemates Dunolly Gold.
Match of the round status sees second-placed Talbot travelling to third-placed Highland Tartan, with both teams looking to cement a spot in the top two.
Highland Gold will seek to be rewarded with form that is better than three losses and three won rinks suggests when they host Carisbrook, who themselves will aim to keep in touch with the top four.
Avoca will be out for a second straight win, as well as to close the gap on the top four, when they host Maryborough Golf at Avoca.
