Midweek pennant gets rolling for season
The midweek pennant got underway in earnest on Tuesday, with some big results across the board.
Maryborough Golf continued their hot start to the season across the board by accounting for Dunolly Gold, 79-34, holding top spot in both division one of the Saturday pennant and midweek pennant respectively.
It was Graeme Orr’s 36-4 win over Wayne Stephens which set the tone for Golf, with Liz Bucknall scoring a 21-14 win over Jim Haigh and Kort Gay scoring a 22-16 win over Fabio Delconte to ensure Golf got off to the best start.
Dunolly Blue took a modicum of revenge for their grand final defeat last season, scoring a 69-36 win over Highland Tartan.
Dunolly Blue scored all three rinks comfortably, with Terry Long defeating Garry Coburn 22-9, Alan Weir taking a 26-15 win over Michael Fryar and Tony Galofaro scoring a 21-12 win over Greg Shay.
Talbot showed they’ll be around the mark again, securing a first-up 62-48 win over Highland Gold.
Ray Prentice scored a 24-11 win over Alan Muggridge, but Highland Gold were able to get on the board with Roy Crawley’s 22-17 win over Robert Jackson. In the end, however, Barb Crossley’s 21-15 win over Paul Gothard allowed Talbot to dictate play.
In the closest game of the round, Carisbrook held out Avoca for a one-shot victory, taking a 56-55 success.
Judy Cassidy was able to score a 21-16 win over Loralee Field, but Avoca hit back thanks to Ian Proctor’s 26-11 win over Laurence Cassidy. In the end, Phillip Burt’s 24-13 win over Ann Loosmore was enough to get the job done for Carisbrook — but only just.
In Tuesday’s second round, High-land Tartan and Avoca will be hoping to get off the mark when the two teams meet at the Highland Society.
One of Dunolly Blue or Carisbrook will remain unbeaten following their meeting at Caris-brook, while Talbot can also join them should they protect their home rink against Dunolly Gold.
Ladder leaders Maryborough Golf will look to continue their good start when they host Highland Gold.
